ArtSoup dishes up fun activities for children
by Britt Aamodt
Children love to make things. They are never so energized as when immersed in the act of creation.
At ArtSoup, Elk River’s community arts festival, children will discover a universe of entertaining, educational and free activities to fire the imagination. Over the June 18-19 weekend, the 35-foot by 90-foot Arts Activities Tent will host dozens of craft tables and demonstrations, many of them provided by area businesses and organizations.
Home Depot of Elk River will be providing 500 Kids Workshop Kits in the ArtSoup Arts Activities Tent. With a little elbow grease and a few knocks of the hammer, participants can walk away with a new birdhouse, crayon holder or any of several self-made projects.
“The kits will be available on a first-come-first serve basis,” said Tami Davidson, Home Depot store manager. “Kids and their parents can spend as much or as little time as they want on the projects. Plus, every kid will receive a free orange Home Depot smock.”
The Sherburne County Historical Society will introduce children to the many uses of wool. They’ll watch a spinning wheel in operation and create a cat toy with felted wool.
Budding green thumbs will get a chance to seed and decorate clay pots from 101 Market. Afterwards, they can have their photo taken, printed and slipped into a Popsicle-stick frame.
“Performers will be doing shadow puppet skits,” said Nichole Hahn, activities tent coordinator with Sharon Tracy and Tara Roth. “We’ll also have children, or the adults with them, create their own stories and shadow puppets.”
“Because ArtSoup falls on Father’s Day weekend this year, we wanted to broaden the idea of the Activities Tent to appeal to families,” said Tracy, who thinks this ArtSoup “has something for every age group.”
Other activities include making rain sticks, putting together nine-patch quilt patterns and cartooning.
