Statement

Michel Schneider is the editor of "Urbanscape Switzerland," a book by a Swiss urban planning agency. I met Michel when I visted the home of another Swiss friend in Switzerland. He told me he wanted me to photograph Minneapolis. Because Michel had the best digital camera, when he visited his brother-in-law in Minneapolis, he photographed the city with me.

The result of my side of the project is "Cityscape MPLS," a slide how of 110 images from the center of the city to its outer limits. Urban panners use slide collections like this to study the architecture of a city, to see the inventory buildings, streets, and natural features.

I found the in 2006 that the architecture of Minneapolis is either fresh or funny. While the ethnic restaurants in the inner city seem to be expanding too fast in roughly painted buidings, the designers of the outer limits, such as Excelsior and Grand in St. Loius Park, seems to be recruiting any kind of boutique that can post an extravagently painted sign.
