Statement

From my press release:
Henry Sibley Drama Club presents Look Homeward, Angel, by Ketti Frings, in Sibley’s newly restored auditorium November 30, and December 1-2. Sibley alum Deanne McDonald directs, with set design by Justin Johnson, light and sound design by Erik Paulson, costume design by Bobbi Iverson-Roesler, and stage management by Joy Nickolay. This production of a classic American coming-of-age story set in 1916 just before the United States entered World War I promises to entertain and enlighten.

Look Homeward Angel is based on Thomas Wolfe's autobiographical novel set in the fictional town of Altamont, North Carolina. The Pulitzer Prize-winning comedy-drama centers on the strong-willed Eliza Gant, proprietor of the Dixieland Boarding House, and her family: Helen, her overworked daughter, Ben, her oldest son, W.O., her bitter husband, and her youngest son Eugene, a “dreamer,” who longs to escape. When new boarder, Laura James, arrives from Richmond, Virginia, a series of events unfold that will change the family dynamics forever.

Sibley’s production is composed of 18 student actors and one student stage manager, ranging in ages from freshman to senior. Senior Diane Germann takes on the challenging role of Eliza Gant opposite junior Julian Spindell in his acting debut as her son Eugene. Student stage manager and reigning Homecoming King, Josh Joshwiak, assists the stage manger with all aspects of the rehearsal and performance process. German foreign exchange student, senior Antonia Lorenz lends some of her native language to her role as Madame Elizabeth, and freshman Anthony Letourneau as Mr. Farrell shares his dance training with sophomore Colleen Borchard as Miss Brown.
