“Two Hundred Specimens” is a miniature cabinet of curiosities, measuring 10” by 10” by 3” and containing over 200 specimens, drawings, photos and writings from the Burren, in Ireland, where I supervised 13 students from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design studying at the Burren College of Art for a semester in 2005. Honoring the tradition of 15th century Cabinets of Wonder as the precursors to Natural History Museums, and continuing an obsession with specimens presented in a contemporary interpretation of historical cabinets that began with my commissioned cabinet for the Carleton College Library, this piece is a physical record of my interactions with the landscape, flora and fauna in the unique geological and cultural environment in and around Ballyvaughan, Ireland, on Galway Bay.
