Jason Miller
Rita Mustaphi
Kelly Radermacher
Galen Treuer
and music by Michelle Kinney and Gary Waryan
Joe Chvala and the Flying Foot Forum promise a SURPRISE!
Jason Miller’s Endless Love is a personal journey about the search for the elusive true love.
Kelly J. Radermacher premieres a two-fold dance and video work, "Convenience".
Rita Mustaphi will tell the enchanting stories of Thumri Malika using music, poetry, and Kathak dance - enhanced by the gestures of the hands, the emotions on the face and rhythmic intricacies on the feet.
Galen Treuer Intimacy: Experiments in Proximity - (The trick here is to become intimate in a respectful way.)
Michelle Kinney on cello will be accompanied by long time collaborator Gary Waryan on tabla Friday, and Patrick Scully dancing on Saturday. The dance cello improvisation will be Michelle and Patrick’s first ever collaboration.
Flying Foot Forum is a vibrant and bold percussive dance/theater company that fuses percussion and percussive dances with many other forms of music, dance and theater, telling unusual tales, creating a wild variety of characters, and exploring universal ideas in inventive and exciting new ways.
Jason Miller’s Endless Love is a personal journey weaving text and movement, it tells how the search for love can be a repetitive series of highs and lows. It reveals the darker side residing within that is best described as an addiction. This addiction eventually evolves into loss. Ultimately, the dance shows the consequence of succumbing to the external and internal pressure to be in a relationship.
Thumri Malika
Lyrics: Pandit Bindadin Maharaj
Composition: Pandit Birju Maharaj
Choreography and dance: Rita Mustaphi
Biography
Choreographer, dancer and educator Rita Mitra Mustaphi creates dance that speaks to people in all walks of life. Her choreography explores many different movements, from demanding, powerful motion to simple gesture and improvisation. A graduate of Rabindra Bharati University of Performing Arts in Calcutta, India Mustaphi is a disciple of the living legend Pandit Birju Maharaj (New Delhi, India) in Kathak style of Indian classical dance. Over the past 27 years, Mustaphi has choreographed, danced, and directed some of the most challenging and exciting dance/theater works that has been presented locally, nationally, and internationally to acclaimed audiences. Her works received local and national funding including the McKnight Foundation, Jerome Foundation, Minnesota State Arts Board, and National Endowment for the Arts. Mustaphi’s selected awards include several McKnight Fellowships for choreography, dancer fellowship, and cultural collaboration awards from Minnesota State Arts Board and leadership award from the Council of Asian Pacific Minnesotans. She has performed in India, USA and Canada. In 1994, she was the company member of the Guthrie Theatre in Minnesota. Mustaphi received opportunities to perform at the prestigious Carnegie Hall in New York with Pandit Birju Maharaj and Company. Mustaphi is also a roster artist for Minnesota State Arts Board, COMPAS and Young Audiences of Minnesota, the organizations that promote global education of multicultural arts.
Convenience
Performance, Choreography & Video by Kelly J. Radermacher
Kelly premieres a two-fold dance and video work, "Convenience". Out of pure convenience, Radermacher prefaces her solo dance performance with a short video dance. Set conveniently from the obscured, obstructed and often incomplete perspective of a camera lens, the frames of the video abstract the performer’s sometimes naive, sometimes intentional, sometimes simply convenient understanding of the relationships and world around her. The concluding solo dance performance seeks to make the audience wildly uncomfortable and disturbed as she attempts to relate to her misconceptions and fabricated truths - which may just be a matter of Convenience.
Galen Treuer is a co-founder of the performance collaboration Live Action Set, a stage performer, and a choreographer on the small scale. A product of Duluth and Oberlin College, he is honored to be a part of the Twin Cities performance community. His next project with Live Action Set is a collaboration with Bob Rosen to be presented at the Red Eye Theater in June.
Intimacy: Experiments in Proximity is a result of exploring the physical questions of how to get close and be close and stay close to people or things or situations. The trick here is to become intimate in a respectful way. There is a beauty in closeness that doesn’t disturb. The goal is to find this beauty and to share it. The goal is also to be specific in space and time: to dance.
