Statement

"How Deep Is My Beauty" is a video on DVD that I am producing for the Minnesota chapter of the Scleroderma Foundation. On the world-wide-web, I am showing a 15-minute version (see web site link) of the 30-minute video.

I've chosen to use a cubist face by Pablo Picasso, "Head of a Woman (Study for Les Demoiselles d'Avignon)," 1907, to represent a patient with scleroderma. When a patient has scleroderma, his or her skin and, in the worst cases, the tissues of the organs inside of the body, harden. Scleroderma disfigures the face and fingers, and the hardening organs can cause death.

The title "How Deep Is My Beauty" questions and explains beauty and the effects of scleroderma. The disease strikes black women most often. To me the title seems to be a thoughtful statement.

Carl de la Cova and I videotaped "Stepping Out to Cure Scleroderma ," a fund raising walk that the Scleroderma Foundation held in Eden Prairie on June 4. I interviewed doctors and patients.
