MESSALINA by Gordon Dahlquist

With timely references to the current state of world affairs, this Pinter-esque tale takes place against a backdrop of implied catastrophe. Is it the end of the world as we know it? Three couples muse over drinks about the fall of Rome - humorously mirroring a similar state of debauchery - while revealing how little anyone knows about anyone else and how they’re all doing their best to deny it.

In a departure for Red Eye from multimedia stagings, the action occurs in a room set where the central features are an oversized bed, a malfunctioning TV with no sound, and the quirky cast of characters that occupies it. Artistic Director Steve Busa stages this engaging production with long time design collaborators Ron Albert, Liz Josheff, and Gary Johnson, along with performers Topher Brattain, Jon Cole, Emily Gunyou, Mark Mahon, Miriam Must, and Toni Trussoni.

About the playwright: Gordon Dahlquist has been a member of New Dramatists, and is a New York Theatre Workshop Usual Suspect. His works include: MESSALINA (Evidence Room, Los Angeles; SPF, New York), BABYLON IS EVERYWHERE: A COURT MASQUE (CINE, Schaeberle Theatre; Theatre Magazine), DELIRIUM PALACE (Evidence Room, Los Angeles; published in Breaking Ground), THE SECRET MACHINE (Walker Space), VORTEX DU PLAISIR (Ohio Theatre), and ISLAND OF DOGS (4th Street Theatre). He has been an artist in residence at ASK Theatre Projects, Dartmouth College, Vassar College, and the Hotchkiss School. He was a guest lecturer at ECLA (Berlin), and a plenary speaker for the 2004 Ohio Shakespeare Conference. His first novel, The Glass Books of the Dream Eaters, was published in August by Bantam/Random House.

Reviews

"This last bit, in fact any of the bits involving Sarah, hold the greatest intrigue because of Gunyou. There are few clues dropped about Sarah, but from the outset Gunyou expresses an almost catatonic anxiety, a mystery made up of stunted emotions that translate into damaged goods." - Graydon Royce, Star Tribune

"Gunyou infuses the character with layers of mystery and loss..." - Ed Huyck, Pioneer Press

"Great Performances in Non-Top 10 Shows (in no particular order): ...
7. Emily Gunyou, Messalina, Red Eye: One hopes to exhibit as much sheer humanity when the breakdown of civilization ensues.” - Quinton Skinner, City Pages
