Oil on hand-sewn canvas. 3'1" X 4'
2004
The painting, Nightlife, is the first of my currently series involving sewing pieces of recycled canvas together. This creates the effect of multiple planes in one painting. This first piece was sewn by hand. I have found that using a sewing machine has made the process much faster and more efficient.
Nightlife is a minimalist, cubist landscape. Beams of light from a car, street lamps and neon signs radiate in all directions, cutting through a blur of sky and buildings. When I lived in Pittsburgh, my friends and I would often drive around the city before the sun came up. Those beams of light were the streets only inhabitance giving the environment an eerie mood. I used the sewn canvas to divide the rays giving the piece more variety and interest.
