(.jpg) After drawing a series of thumbnail sketches, the class at the Como Park Zoo and Conservatory drew larger drawings. I drew on news print with a Micron pen at the tropical pond.
(.jpg) Thumbnail sketches helped frame the final sketch. Again I drew this large sketch with a Micron Pen on news print.
(.jpg) Plants around the tropical pond were as high as 30 feet, and leaves had a diameter of as much as five feet. This is the last sketch I made with a Micron pen on news print.
(.jpg) On the last night of our class at the Como Park Zoo and Conservatory, we made gesture drawings from a small room overlooking the conservatory. I used the side of my charcoal to draw the transparent loo20 foot leaves on charcoal paper.
(.jpg) The side of my charcoal reproduced the transparent leaves in the conservatory. This is a technique I learned in the class.
(.jpg) The charcoal smudge reproduced the transparent leaves, and gestures from the tip of the charcoal made the palm leaves.

(.jpg) Because I would be traveling for Memorial Day, I drew the country pond behind my parent's townhouse on my trip, instead of drawing at the wild flower garden. I used a water-color pencil that made the afternoon scene look dark.
(.jpg) I drew the geraniums at my parent's home with a Micron pen and a water-color pencil. My elderly mother had become seriously ill, so she did not have the strength she needed to plant her geraniums.
(.jpg) The destination of my Memorial Day trip was my parent's cabin on Whitefish Lake. Raking leaves, I thought about the hundreds of pine cones in the yard and on the drive way. I saved two pine cones, and I drew them with a Micron pen.
(.jpg) I started a gesture drawing with a Micron pen as the finale to my trip. My mother told me I should name the picture of the pine trees in the driveway of our cabin "Towering Pines." The White Pines reach nearly 100 feet into the air.
(.jpg) The class had to draw a cut flower at home, using star shapes. I drew a bouquet of freshly cut blue irises with a Micron pen and a water-color pencil.
(.jpg) The class assignment was to draw a feshly cut flower at home using peanut shapes. I drew a freshly cut blue iris with a Micron pen on news print.
(.jpg) Paul McCartney introduced "Memory Almost Full" on June 5 at Starbuck's Coffee shops, playing the album at the shops all day. I carried the iris in a container to Starbuck's coffee, and I drew the iris using star shapes with a Micron pen.

(.pdf) This is a synopsis of my education in drawing. I wrote this for the self-critique at the end of Botanical Drawing I at the Como Park Zoo and Conservatory.
In spring 2008 I drew again at the Como Park Zoo & Conservatory for a botanical drawing class. Mark Granlund teaches the class. I posted new drawings as I made them from April 9 to May 28.
I first drew at the zoo the spring of 2007 in the basic drawing class for the botanical and zoological illustration program. Mary Esch taught the class. I drew in the exotic conservatory gardens on Wednesday nights, and I visited the Eloise Butler Wild Flower Garden in Minneapolis to draw away from the zoo on weekdays.
I drew plants, animals, and biological specimens in pencil, watercolor pencil, and ink. At the wild flower garden, I drew new spring flower buds and leafless trees.

Gregg Reed has some drawing study to his credit already. He adopts motifs with remarkable ease, and he fills the paper from corner to corner. I praised many of the drawings he made in my class. In my review before the class on the last day, I included his multi-toned drawings of the parrot and his drawings of irises. The iris is a difficult flower that I avoid drawing.--Mary Esch
I appreciated the energy and enthusiasm that you and your work added to the class. --Mark Granlund
