A survey of Minnesota artists published in August 1999. Available on-line at mcknight.org and in CD-ROM.
Periodically, The McKnight Foundation examines its arts funding program by conducting research, commissioning essays, and hiring evaluators. In 1999 we discovered a 1946 survey of writers in England done by the Arts Council of England and Waterstone's W Magazine. We felt this short survey was an excellent conveyance to engage artists and give them a voice. We sent out a few thousand and received 405 back. Published as a CD-ROM, it contains all 2,430 responses. A booklet that accompanies the disk includes short analytic essays on each discipline of artists by local writers, artists, and critics.
