Statement

I had the honor of being invited by artist Howard Sivertson to go painting along Lake Superior one day last October. Howard is off to the left painting this same chunk of land. At a break during the painting, I went around the corner to see how Howards painting was coming along, and he was sitting in his lawn chair on the beach smoking a cigar, his painting just washed in. All I could think was, "why aren't you painting?", but I soon realized this: Why shouldn't he enjoy a cigar on a warm fall day. Here is a man who has spent the better of his life painting the north shore and he's put in his time. He has developed a skill and confidence that leads beyond the scene itself. So while I was strugling to catpure the day, he was letting the day capture him. And of course the painting he finished back in the studio went beyond the factual image. You can see Howard's painting, "Meditation Point" as well as mine at Sivertson Gallery in Grand Marais.
