Statement

"Sally Chases Fireflies" is a piece about my upbringing and my family. “Sally”, the name of the family heirloom doll, was passed down to me from my mother who in turn had it passed down to her from her mother. By casting her in bronze, I am honoring my mother as my inspiration, my icon and my muse. “Sally” chases a firefly on her tricycle to add to her collection in the jar containing previously caught fireflies. The fireflies represent my attained goals which I have achieved and goals I will continue to strive for with the support of my mother. Whimsy is a part of my delivery method and I intentionally make the work playful in order to encourage audience engagement. This draws the viewer’s attention long enough to initiate conversation.
