Acrylic painting of abstracted garter snake (thamnophis sirtalis ssp.) scales and pattern.
"After Thamnophis" is an acrylic painting that makes its permanent home the Science and Math building on the University of Minnesota, Morris campus. "Thamnophis" refers to the scientific name of the common garter snakes of Minnesota and the rest of the US. The species found in Minnesota are "Thamnophis Sirtalis" subspecies. specifically the common and red-sided garter snakes.
At the time I painted this, I had taken several photographs of our slithery neighbors. I abstracted their color and pattern to make this 48x24" painting.
