Artist's Statement: The turtle symbolizes strength and solidarity. In the creation story the muskrat placed mud on the back of the turtle. Creating Turtle Island - North America.
“Elders taught me the story of Turtle Island. They showed me when I was young how to do beadwork. Beadwork that would tell that story.” is how Oneida Doug Limόn described his beadwork.
“Turtle Island” tells the powerful creation story of how muskrat placed mud on the back of the turtle to creating Turtle Island - North America - Oneida’s gift of their land. In the beadwork is a single flawed bead. As Doug shows one the beadwork he recounts how elders taught him to use a flawed bead, “That it is there to remind me, and those who look at the beadwork, that the creator is the only perfect one.”
