This is an Adirondack Chair at the JD Rivers Children's Garden in Theodore Wirth Park. The piece can be viewed at Glenwood Avenue just across the corner from Washburn Ave.

Out of all the jobs I've had, I'd have to say this was my favorite. The painting is on a giant chair which I had the honor of revamping for the 25th Anniversary of the JD Rivers Children's Garden.

The garden program is absolutely wonderful. It helps kids learn so much about the various stages of plant life, food cultivation, ecological responsibility, biology etc.

The staff is amazing and does a fantastic job at building up the minds, hearts and spirits of the participants. And the kids take such pride in exercising the very tools which the staff helps them develop.

I'll never forget the touching site of a very proud parent looking with wonder at the care, diligence and understanding that her child expressed when taking her through the garden. With an expertly gentle hand, the child explained the various parts of the flower bud and its cycle to his mother, who was, herself, blooming with pride.

To say the least, the place is just great, and something we in the Twin Cities ought to treasure.

With that in mind, I wanted this piece to be decadent with lush imagery. The idea is something like "All things Bright and Beautiful... and Minnesotan", since all the figures on the chair refer directly to the various life forms indigenous to this part of the landmass.
