Statement

The text originates from Isaiah 6:8 and has been set to music by Daniel Schutte. The refrain is used here.
The decorated initial 'H' is also called an illuminated letter because of the gold used and the light it reflects. The inside of the 'H' is filled with a small uniform pattern called diaper pattern. The word derives from the French 'diapre' meaning variegated. Other decorations are based on vines, leaves (often the acanthus leaf) , or filigree ( monochromatic lines of consistent width).
Two basic color palettes are used. The background painting colors are dark blue, light, green, deep mauve, red and gold. The shading colors are Prussian Blue, dark green, mauve, black, and white.
Here is the illumination/painting process:
1. careful drawing of initial and all decoration
2. application of ground for gilding(gesso, gun ammoniac, size, other)
3. gilding (applying gold leaf, metal leaf, etc.)
4. burnishing (rubbing gold with burnisher to bring up sheen
5. painting background and shading colors; blend; allow to dry.
6. outlining with black to re-establish original outline
7. highlight with white
8. tool pattern into the gold (may be done on some of the gold; cover gold with mylar and apply pattern with fine tip instrument)
Finally, to finish the piece, the main text is lettered.
