Sarah LaRose-Holland

Originally from Mexico City, Arturo Miles began dancing in Minneapolis in the late 90’s. He specializes in Hip-Hop, House, Modern and Waacking dance. He is an original member of Collective Hip-Hop Dance Company, and teaches Hip-Hop and House Dance for the Zenon Dance Company and School. Currently a curator at Patrick’s Cabaret and producing work that falls under experimental theater, themed variety shows, and short film. His work has been shown at The Southern Theater, Bryant Lake Bowl, Intermedia Arts, Gamut Gallery and The Varsity Theater. He has lent his talents throughout the years with Deborah Jinza Thayer, Penelope Freeh, B-Boy J-Sun, The Lovemelts and Three Dances Company.

Dancers from the Christopher Watson Dance Company will perform a new duet, Between, that examines the bliss, the challenges and the more mundane day-to-day interactions of two people in a relationship. The title of the piece is pointedly unspecific in its connotations. It refers to the space separating two people, the period separating two points in time, and the experiences each individual has during any portion of a relationship. Who are these people to each other? Family members? Friends? Lovers? Between was choreographed by Christopher Watson with input from the performers to riveting music by The Bad Plus.

The Christopher Watson Dance Company exists to provide high quality, meaningful dance experiences to people of all ages through training, audience education, and performance. Our focus is on providing accessible activities based on the belief that concert dance can engage and enrich the lives of all members of our communities. CWDC is committed to supporting its young company members through the opportunity to perform alongside seasoned professionals and to develop and present their own choreography.

Christopher Watson holds an MFA in Choreography and Performance from the University of Michigan School of Music, and studied with the Houston Ballet Academy, Chicago Moving Company and at the Merce Cunningham Studio in New York. He has choreographed more than 50 dance pieces for his own company and as guest artist with other dance companies. CWDC’s repertory includes buoyant, musical and lyrical dances as well as dramatic and theatrical pieces.

Jennifer Glaws presents White Space, an examination of the expression “15 minutes of fame.” The piece draws attention to the drive and disconnecting perspective between an individuals’ desire to be seen at the top of their world and a commonality of these determined individuals to not see anything themselves along the way. The dance is a trio giving a satirical view of a character who has “made-it.” In the piece this character is a rock-star. The subject of the dance will be delivered portraying opposition in atmosphere and time and using gesture, rhythm and repetition in movement phrase-work. The piece is a rhythmic modern dance work.

Choreographer Pramila Vasudevan’s company Aniccha Arts will perform a solo dance work performed by Chitra Vairavan. Pramila shares the following about her artistic work. “I create marks. I cast long shadows. The texture of my digits, arms and spine become an unfolding physical language that pollute pictures of romanticized perfection. While searching for an authentic connection with the sub-continent I was not born in, I access popular culture and find inspiration in music and film. I observe bodies, their language, mannerisms, and interactions. I collect hand-gestures, footprints, and sounds from a group of bodies that seemingly look like me. I am simultaneously excited and influenced by post modern dance as practiced in MN, where everyday movement is treated as a valid dance vocabulary to create unique methods of dance composition. I am interested in designing a world that uses a collection of Indian gestures and sounds gathered from popular culture and present them in a new context.”

Sarah Hauss is a choreographer, dancer, and teacher who has been living and working in the Twin Cities for over 20 years. She has a BA in dance from the University of Oregon and an MFA in dance from the University of Colorado. She is also a licensed K-12 Dance Educator and has great interest in interdisciplinary learning. She has danced and choreographed in New York, California, and Oregon as well. Her work has been supported over the years by Red Eye Collaborations, the McKnight Foundation, the Jerome Foundation, and the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council. She was a founding member of Paula Mann Dance and Artistic Director of Riverbend Dance Arts from 1993-1999. Hauss has danced with Kinetic Evolutions since 2010. Sarah has also worked with Gomez Dance Group, Third Rabbit Dance Ensemble, Interstate Dance Collective, Gerry Girouard and the Christopher Watson Dance Company. She currently teaches dance at Gustavus Adolphus College and teaches yoga and movement at the Saint Paul Yoga Center and Studio Sevilla in Minneapolis.

Sarah Hauss will present different dance works on each night. On Friday April 4th, she performs a solo From One Place to Another. "We must be willing to let go of the life we planned, so as to live the life that is waiting for us." J. Campbell

On Saturday April 5th, Hauss will present Rebound. Inspired by my memories of watching and swimming in lake Superior. I think of old wisdom, stormy waters, unrelenting vast cold waves, and ancient clarity. Dancers performing in Rebound include Katherine Arndt, Katy Becker, Hollie Edlund, Rachel Johnson, Ashley Narum, and Ryan Parent.

Sarah LaRose-Holland will premiere a new solo work performed by Jennifer Pray. We all find ourselves facing challenges and discerning how to overcome them. This dance delves into the experiences of confronting, accepting, regrouping, and persevering through challenges. Performed to Phillip Glass’ Duo No. 4, this new dance work shares a richness and weight in both the music and choreography. This piece is mixed with hope, doubt, questioning, reminiscing, savoring, and forging ahead. Do we resign ourselves to circumstance? Do we embrace, adapt, and overcome? Who are we in this process?

Sarah LaRose-Holland is the Artistic Director of Kinetic Evolutions Dance Company, a modern dance company formed in 2006 that performs virtuosic, dynamic and emotionally engaging work. Sarah began her dance career in Florida and has been part of the Minneapolis dance community since the mid-90s. Sarah’s focus in her professional career has been in modern dance. She performs regularly with the Christopher Watson Dance Company and is the company’s Assistant Director. Her work has been supported by the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council, Target Foundation, the United Way, and most recently by KBEM Jazz 88. In 2013, Sarah collaborated with renowned jazz pianist Butch Thompson to produce Destination Twin Cities. This show was well received by audiences, and Thompson won a SAGE Award for his sound design for the performance. Sarah looks forward to her next collaboration with Butch in 2015.

In 2004, Sarah founded the Kinetic Kitchen dance series and began presenting regional choreographers. The Kinetic Kitchen series has been produced at the Mounds Theatre, Varsity Theater, Old Arizona Center for Performing Arts, and Patrick's Cabaret. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Kinetic Kitchen dance series. Sarah is thrilled to celebrate this landmark with artists and audiences at the April Kinetic Kitchen performances!
