NAUTILUS MUSIC THEATER AND MINNESOTA DANCE THEATRE

TO PRESENT ORPHEUS AND EURIDICE



Minnesota Dance Theatre joins forces with Nautilus Music-Theater to present ORPHEUS AND EURIDICE at the Pantages Theatre, April 18th through 27th.

Winner of a 2005 Obie award, ORPHEUS AND EURIDICE is a extraordinary music-theater-dance piece by the bright young composer Ricky Ian Gordon, whose opera THE GRAPES OF WRATH was commissioned and presented last year by the Minnesota Opera. His music has been called an "accessible idiom of disarming lyrical directness -- bursting effervescence -- songs that blithely blur the lines between art song and the high-end Broadway music of Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim -- caviar for a world gorging on pizza."

The production features vocalist Norah Long (seen in Nautilus' THE LAST FIVE YEARS, GOBLIN MARKET, INTO THE WOODS, and dozens of Rough Cuts presentations). She joins the dancers from Minnesota Dance Theatre, along with pianist Mindy Eschedor and clarinetist Pat O'Keefe, as they offer this touching and personal account of the ancient Greek myth about love and loss that celebrates the birth of art.

ORPHEUS AND EURIDICE is choreographed by Cynthia Gutierrez-Garner, who served as Minnesota Dance Theatre's first choreographer-in-residence from 2000 through 2002. She is working closely with Nautilus Artistic Director Ben Krywosz, ensuring that the production will truly be a collaborative artistic vision, combining the aesthetics of dance, opera, theater, and chamber music.

"I first worked with Ricky back in 1995, and we have presented many of his songs in our Rough Cuts program," said Nautilus Artistic Director Ben Krywosz. "When we first considered a full production of ORPHEUS AND EURIDICE, I knew right away that Minnesota Dance Theatre would be the ideal collaborators." Lise Houlton, Artistic Director of Minnesota Dance Theatre, agreed, saying "I heard the piece in Nautilus' Rough Cuts series, and was so moved by the gorgeous music and poignant drama. This is going to be a thrilling combination of dance, drama, music, and song."
