The Real Reason We Sit Together and Breathe
because love is here at the table
amongst us
because the wine is mellow and
you are laughing, dear ones
because the plates are empty
with puddles of oil
spilled to the corners
filled with bread crumbs and salt
because I watched you dance
that baby in your arms
and the look on your face
was the look I remember on mine
the early days when you were
newly-born and my life
stumbled out of pain
into pure wonder
because we are suddenly family
where my apron strings are still torn
from your pulling away
because the long days of
wondering if you would live
through the teen-aged risk-taking
that brought me to my knees
every week-end
the love that cracked me hard
against the impossibility
of changing your fate
to suit my sense of what
should be, have now diminished
because we made it to this day
holding in my cradled arms
a being of my blood and hope
because each breath is a promise, dear ones
I rest in the thought
of your parenting flight
I repeat these names added
to my daily prayers
Jason Thomas, Nicholas Josiah, Joshua Samson
I know I will buy children’s books
and funny toys and paints in a box
I know I am getting another chance
to love imperfectly
but with all of my being.
