Presente! is an interdisciplinary poetic program, underscored to contrast rhythmic energies with topics such as crimes against humanity. This show features traditional Afro-Cuban rhythms played on conga and includes spontaneous painting by visual artist Branko Gulin. Presente! is adaptable to most any setting and is available for performance.
The paintings and video excerpts from the show's opening run in May 2008, are up for viewing on the web at Unlikely Stories: http://www.unlikelystories.org/herrickgulin0708.shtml
A Presente! CD (Live) and chapbook of the poems are forthcoming.
--I loved the dual-performance aspect…one performer’s painting on a large canvas, as the other plays congas and recites and sings...definitely lower-key, yet gives you a lot to take with you. Love the Bembe!
--Really, really enjoyed this piece, drumming and terrific spoken word, plus the chance to watch a visual artist at work! The Piece “monocle man” especially resonated with me. As the beatles put it “ah, look at all the lonely people”. Kudos to Leigh and Branko for putting themselves out there!
--Beautifully structured “album” set of Leigh’s calls to hearts and minds, including two unusual and striking tangents. Branko is an extraordinary painter and flows with the tone and some tangents of his own. Excellent show. Leigh sees hope and even salvation where many less tired just stare.
