Statement

What do women want?

We want to stay tender when the
impulse is to scream
We want to stay strong no matter
the fear back in our throats
We want to love despite the ice
chipped away from despair to melt
into rivers

We want food for our tuliped
souls, shoes that don’t pinch our flight,
a backbone straight enough to sway with
or without someone to bear on our hips

We want boys to cuddle and tell
stories with, girls to plant with and sing
We want men who aren’t afraid to cry
and sisters unafraid to let the wildness
within them grow into a jungle

We want to wander the maze
We want to dance in moonlight and
croon by the cave
We want the stars to be around
our waists and on our ankles, we want
flowers to bloom out of our
garments like we are made of moss

We want the windows to be clear
so we can know if our neighbor needs a hand
We want loneliness to be a humming
harmony under the joy of connection and
solitude, to be wind in our
hair as we face the direction of our fate
We want birth to be the way we
kneel to each other and death the way
we rise and surrender

We want peace to be like Grandma’s
warm quilt around our shoulders, patched out
of memories, determined to hold strong
We want the taste of life to be as sweet as a
first kiss from someone we adore and as deep
as the first time we bled on our
way to womanhood
And we want laughter to ripple wide
as the ocean, tears to leave a bit of
ourselves behind
