16" x 20" oil and fabric painting on museum wrapped canvas with painted sides

Statement

This oil paintings is from the exhibit Waterbourne Witness: Elegies for My New Orleans, an exhibit of 15 paintings and a book at the Bloomington Art Center showing until August 29th, the third anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.

Sleeper is intended to be an enigmatic image. The accompanying essay describes some of the circumstances when hurricane survivors entered flooded buildings and revisits Lakeview, the artist's former home, one year after the hurricane.

“Wading through upended possessions in hot, unlit rooms they called out for occupants, their voices, more often than not, answered only by the sound of water lapping at the walls.”

The hard back book,Waterbourne Witness
is available at www.lulu.com , for $42 plus shipping and handling. Enter Shelley Holl or Waterbourne Witness in the search box.

The oil painting, Sleeper is 16" x 20", on museum wrapped canvas with painted sides. All paintings in the exhibit are $750.

A portion of the proceeds from Waterbourne Witnesspaintings and books will be donated to Young Audiences of Louisiana, an organization that provides residencies to artists and after-school arts programs to children, all of whom were profoundly affected by Hurricane Katrina.
