Statement

I was asked to participate as the visual artist for a community-based performance called North& Beyond. The organizer/director, Billy Yalowitz along with the support of Art Sanctuary, Artworks in Different Places, Grands As Parents and Rohm &Haas sponsored the project, which brought together poetry, dance, jazz guitar and visuals. The idea was to create a multi-media production following the success of North Called Home the year before, that would bring together artists and local teens to create a theatrical piece based on the Church of the Advocate’s powerful political-religious murals. For my contribution, I led middle school kids, teens and college students in an exploration of the murals, which was then translated as a repeat-pattern for fabric, which was then used to design costumes and props for the performance.
