6"x16", Oil on Mounted Linen

This painting is painted on a piece of linen that was left over from a much larger nine by twelve foot piece that I had stretched (like an animal skin -laced the linen with grommits in the linen and eye screws along the inside of a stretcher frame I had made), groomed (with a pin, tweezers, and mustache scissors), sized (with rabbit skin glue), and gessoed (with a gesso made from scratch). This work was how I began my apprenticeship with Mark Balma. Up to that point I never knew how much one can put into their craft...it is endless. Mark would then 'havest' what he needed for paintings from the large piece. When there wasn't much left, he allowed me to keep the remanents. At that time, I did not know how to paint well enough to justify using such special linen, and I am not sure I know any better now, but what I do know is that I have painted on many surfaces - none have been nicer to paint on.
