“Steel and Air” was painted on my birthday last November. The morning frost surrendering to the rising sun making for an epic light effect. I felt blessed to have the chance to chase. As I began to work two guys wearing hard hats shut down their bob cat and rake and made their way over, The shorter of the two asked, “Mind if we look at what you doin’?”
I nodded, “Nope, help your self.”
Gesturing to his companion,“I told him, anyone painting out in this cold must be good.”
I replied “Well, if you’re still around in a couple of hours stop back and judge for yourself.”
The morning progressed and I moved my easel and gear staying out of the bridge’s shadow. In November where there is sunshine there is warmth. I was a bit surprised about how well utilized the walking paths under the bridge are and by the time I was nearing completion on the work I had several joggers from the St. Paul Travelers Insurance company and various dog walkers passing by encouraging me. At one point a lady coming up from behind me, asking, “Are you Joshua Cunningham?” upon my reply, she said - “I thought it might be, it looked one of your paintings.” she introduced herself as someone who always comes by the Art Crawl when she and her husband can make it. – She went on to share how much she enjoys sharing the work on the website (www.mnartists.org/joshua_cunningham) with the other nurses at the hospital.
The two construction guys from the power plant returned as I was finishing up,
the chatty one saying, “well, its almost perfect;you forgot to get us in it.”
