Marker, Color Pencil on Poster Board. 22 X 28 in. Spring 2008.
Produced by stippling marker onto a a glossy, poster board surface. Such a
surface allows for several layers of marker to be compounded and for
the possibility of different hues and values to be produced other than
just those manufactored by the company. To an extent, glossy surfaces
allow for the erasure of marks and for the blending and smearing of
marker. Silver color pencil is put down on top of this to create
metallic and textured surfaces.
The Four Horsemen depicted are
symbols for four institutions that continually demonstrate their
stranglehold on the US, and, more than any other institution,
contribute to the degradation of American communities. From left to
right they are represented as Ronald McDonald (Health Care), Uncle Sam
(Military), McGruff (Law Enforcement), and Jesus (Religion). Outside
these core symbols lie more subtle imagery and stylistic choices, all
with allegorical value, that I hope the viewer will explore to their
amusement.
The approach I took to this piece evolved from
literary studies in High School and from the necessity of having to
find a suitable replacement for paint (not being able to safely use
such materials in my dorm room in college).
