Statement

The idea for this piece came to me after studying Chuck Close’s work, and especially his use of grids. I needed to find the perfect image to form the basis for my collage. This proved to be a very difficult task. Eventually, the Siouxsie Sioux image found me while I was standing at the bus stop. A newspaper page came floating down the street, and settled at my feet. I looked down and there was Siouxsie Sioux looking up at me, a wonderful silhouette profile, exactly what I had been looking for. I stuffed the piece of paper into my bag and brought it home. I divided the image into a grid of 160 squares. Then I began collecting matchbooks from different sources. Each matchbook would represent one of the squares on the grid. The hardest part was finding images to match each square, and then laying them out edge to edge to match up with each other to create the overall image. This was an intense process that took me quite a bit of time, but I was very satisfied with the final result.
