Maria Cristina Tavera
Untitled (Legendary Beauty), 2009
Woodblock Steamroller Print 50" x 103"
"This piece is inspired by an incident in 2007, when Miss Mexico wore a controversial dress in the Miss Universe Pageant. The skirt depicted scenes from the Cristero War-an uprising in the 1920s. The violent uprising protested anti-clerical laws reinforced by other political and material concerns including land reform. The effects of the war on Mexico were profound with more than 5,000 people dead and estimates by some that as much as 5 percent of the population fled to the U.S. Among the images on the dress were Roman Catholic rebels hanging from posts and a man facing a firing squad. The outfit included a bullet-studded belt and crucifix necklaces. Pageant owners had designers remove the offending scenes of death and included an image of the Virgin of Guadalupe in their place."
