Statement

This sculpture was created for the exhibit Foot in the Door 4, 2010 at the Minneapolis Institute of Art. 

My sculpture is based on the concept of creating artwork from simple materials, often found in the home that can mimic more sophisticated materials used to create art.  I'm exploring how to create art that does not require special materials or tools.    When I walk through an art supply store, I am overwhelmed at the prices of some materials. I'm a college grad with an art degree and I recently became an art teacher.  I'm not able to afford some materials or tools for certain processes, ie. clay or a kiln. 

This sculpture is made from a baker's clay recipe using baking soda and cornstarch that is mixed with water and then cooked on a stove top until it forms a thick mashed potato consistency.  The final sculpture was then baked at a low temperature in the oven until the clay is hard and the moisture has been removed as much as possible.   

The final result mimics plaster when the baker's clay is kept white. 

The subject of this artwork was inspired by the cracked finish baker's clay results in after baking. It worked well to use the face of an old man as my subject.
