Statement

The elements of Still Life are sewn with wire to a12" X 12" stretched canvas. No solder, rivets or adhesives were used; like all my metalwork, it was assembled using textile, basketry and braiding techniques. Etching, engraving, stamping and hammering were used for texture and detail.  Colored using a torch.

Still Life is a sculpture of a painting.  As such, it plays with the idea of medium, using copper to echo a motif that has been represented in paintings and drawings for hundreds of years.  It also plays with dimension:  most of the scene is 2-D, and only the life is “brought to life” by the addition of depth.  I plan to make this the first of a series of 3D flowers on 2D backgrounds.
