The MRC 20TEN is an action, a 44 mile action, downstream...toward the
Mississippi River's delta, the who dat New Orleans, the resilient home
town of jazz- THE American music. JAZZ IS LIFE/LIFE IS JAZZ!

Each swing
of my paddle will create a current of life in the waters of Old Man
River dedicated to all in the Gulf Coast. Each swing of my paddle in
the mighty river will join the water's song and create a gospel song of
we hear your cry in the night and day of the BP oil disaster.
And we stand and march with and for you...once again.
Please fuel my dedication to the Mississippi River and my 44 mile
action as a prayer for the restoration of the Gulf Coast.

The SPARROW 2010 series came to life in response to the fragility, the sirens, the uncertainty and the cherished revelations of life: the suddenness of choking despair in tragedy to the suddenness of passion, joy and lull when simply hearing the living voice of a beloved.
The earthquake that shattered Haiti was in a sudden moment. Compassion sang in as a song and an action. Stepping up into the rhythm and cry of life is the dance, the hymn, the weave, the blues, the laughter, the wail, the morning, the night, the water and the music of the odyssey. I believe the continuous gentle shower of compassion and tenderness, listening with awe and kindness astounds fear so love can be released, rise and breathe wide and deep. Where there has been neglect and scars the heart has thorns, whisper a gentle garden. Love can be an implosion, an internal earthquake...

...and love and loving can be a mighty/gentle river, a course of waters that restores, protects, renews and forever changes your heart, body and soul.

My gift of the SPARROW prints is a gesture of love and compassion to ALL the life that was and continues to be damaged and destroyed by the BP oil disaster throughout the Gulf Coast....and to ALL that prevails, overcomes and soars to a new river of life.

I think us Minnesotans living beside the birth place of the mighty Mississippi River and those paddling its waters can lift the sorrows of our neighbors downstream. Catherine L. Johnson's residence and studio is two blocks away from the Mississippi River.

She has has received prestigious international and national awards for her art including: NYC's P.S. 1 International Studio Residency (one of forty-one artists worldwide selected to participate),the Bush Artist Fellowship and nominated three times for the exclusive Joan Mitchell Artist Fellowship program.
