The Mississippi river flows north for a few miles from its source at Lake Itasca, then turns south for its 2320 mile journey to the Golf of Mexico. The rivers beginning is humble with the stream narrow and shallow enough to walk across in just a few steps. This oil painting is from an area just north of the Mississippi headwaters in a wet marshland area.
