Oil on canvas. 8' x 15"
My work has the tendency to grow from my personal moods and struggles. Purge is a surreal self-portrait. I used a thick, painterly technique of applying paint to create a layered, highly textured effect. The mood of the painting is dark and sullen. The painting shows an obvious attribute in the spot light, regardless of the subject's attempts to hide it. Her unusually large and socially unacceptable appendages are impossible to hide.
This is a metaphor for the personal traits that we try to hide from critical eyes, even though we know the characteristics are obvious. We often want to expel or purge these unwanted elements. But even if we empty them into the pages of a journal or onto a canvas, they are still inside us somewhere. And they make us who we are so, ultimately, these quarks aren’t all bad.
