Nicholas Schaffer
uses his art to investigate body image, sexual orientation, and
emotional dissonance within the self. Through the ideas that we have of
ourselves, Schaffer’s images of shape-shifting melding bodies take on
themes that are reminiscent of the changes that happen in life. Schaffer
says that in his photographs: “The
body becomes a relic, a survivor, and subject to dissociation, a
physical representation of stepping into a void, an escape from the
self.”
Schaffer
does not digitally manipulate any of his images. They are photographed
using a small theater set that he built with a mirror installation
inside of it.
