Ballet Minnesota dances the impossible dream
in the classic Don Quixote
St. Paul, MN (April 1, 2011) – Ballet Minnesota presents its annual Spring Classic, “Don Quixote” during the 23nd Annual Minnesota Dance Festival at the Fitzgerald Theater in downtown St. Paul, Friday and Saturday, May 6 & 7, 2011 at 7:30 p.m. in addition to a matinee performance at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 7, which will feature excerpts from Don Quixote and a variety of dance from Minnesota Artists.
The classic Don Quixote ballet, created during the classical period of ballet, was choreographed in 1869 in Moscow, Russia. The setting for the heart-thumping action is Barcelona, Spain. Audiences will delight in seeing Basilio attempt to court the baker’s daughter, Kitri, and keep her away from the rich and power Gamache. Witness Don Quixote dream of the ideal love after the dryads cast the spell of Amour on Don Quixote using their weapon of choice, charm. Come into the rousing camp of the gypsies and smile at the adventures in the tavern. This classic ballet story will appeal to all ages.
The principal roles will be performed by Oksana Konobeyeva, formerly with the Bolshoi Theater and American
Ballet Theater in New York City, and Matthew Prescott, a dancer with Suzanne Farrell Ballet Company at
The Kennedy Center, Washington, D.C.
The Festival Director is Andrew Rist, also the Artistic Director for Ballet Minnesota. Cheryl Rist has restaged “Don Quixote” and is the costume designer for the performance. The music for “Don Quixote” was composed by Ludwig Minkus, most noted for ballets he composed while serving as First Ballet Composer to St. Petersburgh Imperial Theater.
The Dance Festival also offers an enriching variety of dance performances that will showcase works from Minnesota’s foremost dance artists, including a special children’s story ballet, “Socerer's Apprentice” (performed by Classical Ballet Academy of Minnesota, original choreography by Andrew Rist). On the preceding Sunday, May 1st, at 3 p.m., the Dance Festival will showcase local dance schools performing various dance styles including ballet, modern, jazz, hip-hop and more!
