In Hello, Dolly!, Dolly Levi, the well-known matchmaker, attempts to find herself a husband in the wealthy Horace Vandergelder. Meanwhile, she matches together a rich widow, Irene Molloy with Vandergelder's employee, Cornelius Hackl. She also sets up Molloy's assistant, Minnie, with Cornelius's assistant, Barnaby. Further, she matches the poor artist, Ambrose, with Vandergelder's niece, Ermengarde. In the end, after a ruckus at an upscale restaurant and a court case, Dolly convinces Vandergelder to marry her and all is well.

Sally Struthers was animated on this warm evening after a week of arduous rehearsals for her lead role in Bloomington Civic Theatre's production of "Hello Dolly!" and she listened intently as the cast and crew -- her "40 new friends" -- emotionally thanked her for treating them like colleagues and never "acting like a star."
Struthers shook her head vigorously when she heard this, rejecting the notion that this had ever crossed her mind. She raised her hand as if taking an oath and told the room, "I'm just Sally from Portland, Oregon, daughter of Robert and Margaret, sister of Sue."
