This painting is in response to an exceptionally long winter in northern Minnesota this year when I felt especially color deprived. Based on a scene at my brother's home in California, where his orchids are spring-like and "joyful," I attempted to depict the atmosphere I long for. My work is strongly influenced by the Impressionists Henri Matisse and Paul Cezanne, and by Frida Kahlo.
