The Pear Project dives deeply into personal metaphors of the pear as the mother, the child, and the womb and surfaces with visceral, humorous, sensual, and universally human contradictions. The image and form of the pear have long held many meanings for me, but none as potent as my pear explorations about identity and motherhood. Much of my recent work touches on the experiences of pregnancy and birth, conflicts of working and mothering, and celebrating the miracle of life and our interconnectedness.
Exposing the copper wire wrapped pears to the forces of nature proved to be a visceral process of embracing change and chance. As the Wrapped Pears gradually shriveled in the sun, got drug off by curious squirrels and slowly eaten by fruit flies, I vigilantly photographed the process at various outdoor sites on the MCAD campus.
