This interactive devotional installation invites viewers to stencil ashes onto a friend’s forehead. Three stencils were cut out of transparent acetate in the shape of a broken heart. Three sizes of the same shape were available to accommodate a range of forehead sizes. The ashes were contained in a ubiquitous crystal ash tray. The ashes were purchased from a liturgical supply retailer and the ash tray was stolen from a Minneapolis bar. Viewers are invited to sit across from each other at a small table under a low-hanging kitchen table light. Burlap was hung on the wall adjacent to the table.
This activity echoes the liturgy of Ash Wednesday, a liturgical holiday which marks the beginning of Lent. Traditionally, Ash Wednesday worshipers receive ashes in a cross-shape on their forehead as a reminder of mortality. In both the traditional liturgy and the Heartbreak Exhibition version, participants are reminded, “From dust you came, and from dust you shall return.”
