welded steel, motor, electronics
This was an early work that investigated the use of sound in sculpture. I was struck by the sound that is produced when a wood hand saw is played musically, and decided to experiment sculpturally with the concept. My first attempt was a sculpture that used a simple gear works to turn motors on and off as way of programming the sounds that would occur when the sculpture is played. In my most recent sculpture, a programmable logic controller was used to control the striking of hammers on the bands of spring steel that conduct the sounds. These sculptures must make aesthetic concessions to the mechanical nature of motors and geometry, but at the same time, in the building of a pattern of moving elements and the flow of the sound from the sculpture, a transcendence of mechanics is taking place.
