Statement

Using a performance license from Broadcast Music Inc. (BMI), "et al The Beatles and Friends" plays music by the Beatles and associated artists on the world-wide-web. My introduction to BMI started in an exam for a college media class, but my interest in patents and copyrights started when I was a boy, as I helped my father apply for his patents. Today copyright law focuses on providing benefits to the creator of a work, so BMI pays royalties to songwriters. The Beatles have a created a large repertoire of work--and today add the works that their children are creating, new projects from the living Beatles, including classical performances, new concerts, re-mixed songs and albums, cover albums that other artists record, and re-releases of music in new formats. So I add new songs and video interviews to my media player quarterly with Boris Pophristov, my web master in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. The media player is an example on a web site that shows pharmaceutical industry executives how they can license film and music to make their meetings and web sites more interesting. But the media player is also a form of artistic expression for me, and an entertaining arts resource. I'm learning how to increase the number of people who visit the media player. Promoting the media player for $1 per day on search engines has linked the player to millions of computers and multipled the visitation rate. Finding cleared video interviews requires time and effort. I have been fortunate to find and purchase, at reduced prices, fascinating video interviews featuring Sean Lennon and Producer George Martin from Face Culture in Amsterdam and Sheridan Square Entertainment in Nashville. Kate Bush's interview with Yoko Ono plays courtesy of Rykodisc and Yoko Ono's Studio One. It arrived in a news kit that I studied to prepare to interview Yoko Ono for Cake magazine. The BMI web music license allows me to play music from the media player. I cannot, however, provide downloadable files. Downloading, say for ipods, would require making a new copy of a selection each time a user downloads the selection, and doing that without the publisher's permission would violate copyright laws.
