- I was visiting my cousin who lives in Falmouth, MA on Cape Cod and runs the mass spectrometer at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute. One day I borrowed his bicycle and rode to the Martha's Vineyard ferry, crossed, got off and rode around the island, ending up in Edgartown. I wanted to go to the next island - Chappaquiddick - but it was off-season and I had read that the ferry wasn't running. Looked down and there it was! So I got on, rode to the Atlantic Ocean side and across the infamous Dyke Bridge where Ted Kennedy and Mary Jo Kopechne had met their fate. Across the bridge was a huge deserted beach; by this time I had been riding nonstop for around five hours and was exhausted. I flopped on my back on the beach and sort of passed out; remember clenching my fists in the sand and being amazed at the texture. It was coarse, rounded, pure quartz. I stuffed some in my pocket and started heading back. Stopping on the bridge (which by this time had acquired sturdy timber guard rails), I looked down. The water was only a couple feet deep and crystal clear. The tide was coming in, along with a few wisps of fog and it was starting to get dark. Spooky. I got on my back and rode for hours all the way back Home.
(The next summer, John Kennedy, Jr. met His Watery Fate only a few miles out to sea.)
