.... We are fortunate to live on a lake (Orono) in Elk River, Mn. The lake joins the Elk River somewhat north of us. There are sandbars there and a degree of tranquility too even though the spot is quite close to US hwy 10. Fred and Milli, our labs, kindly consented to appear in the photograph that led to this painting.

This painting actually started out as almost an abstract concept. The black shapes (dogs) were going to be rendered flat monotone against the detailed background. I wanted one of the shapes walking off the canvas as a joke of a sort. That idea stayed but I needed to bring the dog shapes into flux with the background as the flat over detailed concept looked awful.

This was an interesting project. Most of the background was put in with a brush about "...." wide. The paintstrokes were pretty much blended in a vertical manner. Every once in a while I used a wider brush in a horizontal movement to blend the verticals. The front reeds gave me an opportunity to freehand in the primary shapes and were left pretty much as is.
