BRIGHT CIRCLE documents the exciting lives of Jim Thorpe, Gus Welch, Louis Towanama and the other great American Indian athletes from Carlisle and Haskell Indian Boarding Schools, and their modern-day counterparts, Brett Favre, Dan Hampton, Amber DeLuca, and others, as they influence the lives of younger athletes today. From the start of the NFL by Jim Thorpe, to the Superbowl victories of Brett Favre, Indian athletes have excelled in sports, continuing to inspire new generations of athletes from all cultures. “Have you made your ancestors proud today?” The Circle of American Indian athletes shines bright — Welcome to a New Dawn — Bright Circle!

Over the past 100 years, American Indian participation in sports has decreased at an astonishing rate. At the turn of the 20th Century, intercollegiate and professional sports were dominated by American Indians, who drew heavily on their heritage for strength. The most notable in a long line of successful American Indian athletes was Jim Thorpe, whose prominent career began at the Carlisle School in Pennsylvania. Carlisle was a small Indian boarding school that dominated the early years of college football. Thorpe went on to achieve the distinguished honor of “Athlete of the 20th Century.” Early American Indian achievement in athletics, most notably football, was ironically facilitated by the highly restrictive environment established by Lt. Richard Pratt, founder of the Carlisle Indian Boarding School. Carlisle sports provided students with the only avenue left open to them for expressing their Indian identity. Since that time, but for a brief period of Haskell fame on the gridiron, public recognition of Indian athletes has greatly diminished. BRIGHT CIRCLE responds to this important question — Where are the Indian athletes today?
