"INVASIONS," a fiber-artwork by Mary Cain, 2005, crinkly ribbon yarn, nylon, cotton and acrylic fibers, knitted eccentric tapestry - 132 cm. by 156 cm.
"I want a sense of intellectual involvement with my art - a strong connection with the history of textiles and the history of art. Just adapting traditional techniques to contemporary tastes doesn't make contemporary art! I think that textiles have the most human vocabulary, the richest history of all. I want to do work in textiles that could not have been done in any other medium."
Mary Cain
Lynn Hegrenes, Duluth, Minnesota: "Wow! I am very impressed! This is an exquisite web-page! Keep up the good work and thanks so much for sharing with me."
Robert O'Connell, Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland: "The light reflectivity, the dimensionality, and the texture of the surface in all of Mary Cain's works are the result of the interaction between the artist's ideas and the process of making. Varying knotting patterns create a palette of texture. The interplay of Mary Cain's concepts with these techniques yields expressive and unique works!"
