I found a book about the famous Parthenon Frieze in Athens. The Frieze is a bas-releif representation of a ceremonial procession- Athenians parading from the city to the Parthenon- like a very long panoramic photograph in stone. The book at first glance seemed comprehensive, documenting the entire frieze in linear order, but only fragments of the original stone had survived. Any holes in the story were recreated with line drawings by later artists. The stone was certain, and the line drawings where beleivable, but there was room for doubt and certainly room for the viewer's imagination to work.
