OX-OP is blasting into the new year with Gary Baseman’s newest solo exhibition, “MOD – Manifestations of Desire” which debuts Saturday, January 7th, further blurring the line between folk and fine art with his strong iconic images, both playful and dark, childlike and adult, id driven and thought provoking.
As a follow-up to his sold-out show at OX-OP in ’03, his newest collection of paintings are in even greater demand, as Baseman’s popularity has exploded with successes including 3 Emmy awards for his cartoon series, Teacher’s Pet (which was also made into a full-length feature film), a 352-page book of his art, titled “Dumb Luck” published by Chronicle Books, solo gallery exhibitions in New York, Los Angeles, and Tokyo, and work hanging in the prestigious permanent collections of the National Portrait Gallery in Washington D.C. and the Museum of Modern Art in Rome.
Entertainment Weekly Magazine named Mr. Baseman as one of the 100 Most Creative People in Entertainment. And in an interview with Baseman for boingboing, Crown Dozen stated that "No single person has done more to help define, progress and legitimize the current movement towards accessible art than Gary Baseman."
An apt description of his quirky, captivating style appeared in Publisher’s Weekly, May 2004: “Eradicating the boundary between sick and silly, Baseman’s paintings and illustrations inhabit a world of cute-and-cuddly depravity. Populated by goofy, wide-eyed dogs, winking devils and decapitated clowns, each work is a self-contained narrative of cartoon mayhem, each character a collision of the adorable and the grotesque.”
Of course, the mesmerizing appeal of Baseman’s work is best appreciated in person. After all, Gary Baseman is leaving sunny California to brave the bitter cold of January in Minnesota. The least we can do to thank him is to show up.
OX-OP is open to the public
