Dance is a big part of Patrick's Cabaret's 20th Anniversary celebration.
The artists and their works:
April 21 and 22
Djola Branner flies in from New York to present "SASH & TRIM" - a collage of theatre, music and dance uncovering the complex man beneath the house painter Djola called "Dad". The man who wrote songs, managed steel bands and told Djola stories on his knee. Djola has been a presence in Minnesota, and actively involved with Patrick's Cabaret, since he first performed in Minneapolis with the PomoAfroHomos in January of 1994. Now working and studying in New York, Djola is glad to be returning to this home away from home in April.
Kats D Fukasawa, director of his own dance Company Paneer Project, and soloist with Ranee Ramaswami's Ragamala Dance Theater, has presented an incredible range of work in his Patrick's Cabaret performances. Fot this anniversary he has created "Ningyou (Doll) - Geisha from Outer Space", in which he bites onto Japanese female stereotypes and chews them through music, vocalization and improvisational movements.
Patrick Scully will present the 1982 classic film "Shinders to Shinders", a collaboration with Dan Polsfuss and Roy McBride, celebrating the last little bit of Minneapolis honkey tonk, Hennepin Ave between 6th and 7th Streets before the city sanitized it with a gaping parking lot, and then an even worse development. "Shinder's to Shinder's" was a Minnesota Independent Choreographers' Alliance production, featuring 6 local dancers.
April 28 and 29
Chris Aiken, improviser/dancer par excellence, first met Patrick at an audition for an early Out There series. Shortly afterward they began dancing together, and their work together took them to cities far and wide. Chris now returns from his new home in Philadelphia, dancing in Minneapolis for the first time since he left to get his MFA.
Laurie van Wieren, dancer, performance artist and director of 9x22 was part of the very first ever Patrick's Cabaret. She's been part of the cabaret for all these years, and is here in part this weekend to help the cabaret celebrate National Dance Week. She and Patrick have been quiet co-conspirators in the local dance/performance community for nearly 30 years. Laurie will be presenting " Antonia", the companion piece to "Anthony". " Antonia" is a movement/character study of a young women from the west side of Chicago circa 1960's. She wears a leather jacket, white lace blouse, large black ratted wig, black fishnet hose, and stacked high heels. Antonia smokes, wears a lot of blue eye shadow and is 14 years old. Antonia moves like Anthony: small slightly abrupt movements that play with the sound of tango music heard in the background. She dances and probably tries to talk.
Patrick Scully will present "Too Soon Lost" a multi media work from 1990 which contrasts and combines the loss of Patrick's downtown neighborhood with/to the loss of friends to AIDS.
John Killacky and Larry Connolly come to Patrick's with the world premiere of their latest video collaboration entitled "Holding On." This 25 minute work continues Killacky's examination of his and other artists' experiences with disability. The documentary features three couples coping with disability: Killacky and Connolly; cellist Joan Jeanrenaud who suffers from MS and her caregiver and former partner Alessandro Moruzzi; and visual artist Katherine Sherwood who suffered a stroke and her husband Jeff Adams. They discuss the impact of disability on their households.
