1966 VW Beetle Hand Painted with Dupont Centura Automotive Enamels by Brently Michael Davis

In 2001, I was commissioned to hand paint a vintage 1966 VW Beetle. I used Dupont Centari Automotive Enamel Paints, Chinese calligraphy brushes, and sponges. Ask any automotive painter how to brush paint a car using automotive paints, and s/he will rightfully think you are an ignorant putz. The paint dries so fast you can see it hardening as you apply it. If you paint too slow, your brush will glue itself to the car. Every stroke must be fast and perfect, and if you touch it while it is hardening it will bubble, crack, wrinkle and leave an ugly spot that is impossible to hide. Utilizing over ten years of professional painting experience, I developed a technique that not only makes it possible to hand paint cars with auto paints, but creates a result unlike any other automotive painting technique on earth. The secret is skill. The paint is as thin as ink, and must be applied with the skill of a Chinese calligraphy master. A harmony of speed and fluidity which demands each stroke to be simple perfection. I call this “Innovative Artistry.” Tell me what you think.
