Performed by Oneida Trumpeter Chris Moore and Florida State University Orchestra
TRUMPETING THE STONE musically includes elements of Oneida life, such as Oneida brass band music and especially the famed Oneida hymn singing. Early in American history and today, the Oneida People established a reputation for themselves as great hymn singers. Increasing in tempo, the work is rhythmic and exciting as the trumpet soars over the rhythms to the final two drum beats! The Wisconsin Oneida and the Mohicans share a significant history together, both relocated from our original homelands in what is now called New York state. Similar to the Oneida, we fought on the side of the colonists in the Revolutionary War. We fought at Bunker Hill. We greatly supported the colonies, as did the Oneida. Then in 1785, we were vacated from Stockbridge for good. With nowhere to go and all of our homeland stolen, the Oneida accepted us into their ever-dwindling homeland. In 1838, land was made available for the Oneida People in the territory of what would become Wisconsin, as a monumental effort was underway by New York to snatch their remaining land.
